Are sessions confidential?
Yes, therapy is confidential. Confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of therapy that helps build trust between the therapist and the client. It enables clients to feel safe to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without the fear of judgment or exposure.
As a general rule, therapists are legally and ethically bound to keep everything that is discussed in therapy confidential. This means that they cannot disclose any information about the client or their treatment without the client's explicit consent.
However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, therapists may be required to break confidentiality if they believe the client is in imminent danger of harming themselves or others. Additionally, therapists may be required to disclose information if they are subpoenaed to do so by a court of law.
In general, therapists will discuss the limits of confidentiality with clients at the outset of treatment so that clients have a clear understanding of what is and is not confidential.
Can I stop anytime?
